Abiu

Pouteria caimito (Sapotaceae family)

Abiu is native to the Amazon and is generally about 30 ft high but may reach 100 ft in favorable situations.

The fruit is round, sometimes long-tapering at the base with smooth yellow skin when ripe. The translucent flesh is sweet and fragrant, containing 1 to 4 brown seeds.

Until fully ripe, the fruit is permeated with latex and is gummy and astringent.
