Lychee

Litchi chinensis (Sapindaceae family)

Origin: China
Fruiting season: May – July
Height: medium to large tree (30 – 80 ft)
Relatives: rambutan, longan

Lychee originated in China where it has been cultivated for over 2000 years. It is one of Hawaii’s most popular fruits and ‘Kaimana’; one of the most popular varieties due to its consistent
bearing habits, large fruit size and great taste.
Lychee fruits vary in shape from round to heart-shaped, and measure approximately 2” in diameter. The tree produces clusters
of fruit, maturing from green to a stunning bright reddish-pink color. These beautiful trees thrive in well-drained, slightly acidic soils rich in organic matter and mulch.
The fruit has a rough textured, leathery skin which is easy to remove. Inside lies a juicy, translucent flesh surrounding a single
black seed attached only at one end. The fruit texture is grape-like and the taste is light and floral with notes of jasmine and rose.
These highly fragrant, juicy treasures leave an unforgettable taste in your mouth.
